Today I want to talk about nutritional supplements and the industry itself ? do we really need all the supplements that are marketed to us on a daily basis?

We are constantly bombarded by companies? marketing exploits, aimed at selling us the new ?must take? supplement for optimal health- a new true wonder supplement!? But is it really our health that these companies are concerned about? And do the supplements even do what they are supposed to? This is what I wish to talk about in this article, and hopefully you may walk away with a better understanding of supplements and the industry itself.

Nutritonal Supplementation

Nutritional supplementation is a massive worldwide industry, particularly in certain countries:

?In 2010 the USA, Western Europe and Japan where largest markets worldwide for nutritional supplementation products. The supplements can be categorised into various segments such as, vitamins, herbal supplements, sports nutrition, minerals, meal replacement [crazy if you ask me] and specialised supplements. Vitamin supplement sales were the highest for 2010.? [1]

The fact that vitamin supplements sales were highest is interesting, and something I wish to talk about shortly.?But basically, supplements are everywhere?.and that?s great right? We can all be super healthy by just taking that pill each day or by drinking that special shake??.If only it were that simple!

Below are two factors I think everyone should consider when deciding whether or not to take a supplement, or when choosing between supplements:

?

1. Supplement manufacturers don?t have to prove their supplements work!

Let?s take a look at the guidelines supplement manufacturers are ?supposed? to follow when preparing their products ? the following are guidelines laid out by the FDA:

??Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the dietary supplement or dietary ingredient manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that a dietary supplement or ingredient is safe before it is marketed. FDA is responsible for taking action against any unsafe dietary supplement product after it reaches the market. Generally, manufacturers do not need to register their products with FDA nor get FDA approval before producing or selling dietary supplements.* Manufacturers must make sure that product label information is truthful and not misleading. Under the FDA Final Rule 21 CFR 111, all domestic and foreign companies that manufacture, package, label or hold dietary supplements, including those involved with testing, quality control, and dietary supplement distribution in the U.S., must comply with the Dietary Supplement Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPS) for quality control. In addition, the manufacturer, packer, or distributor whose name appears on the label of a dietary supplement marketed in the United States is required to submit to FDA all serious adverse event reports associated with use of the dietary supplement in the United States.? So here we can clearly see how relaxed the rules are for nutritional supplement manufactures and sellers ? they don?t even have to prove they work!

2. The delivery method (tablet, gel capsule etc.) can affect whether the supplement is absorbed by the body

I won?t go into too much detail here because I just want to raise awareness of this issue, but another issue that most people are probably unaware of is that some ?fillers? (e.g. magnesium stearate, tricalcium phosphates etc.) used to create the supplement, may actually prevent the key ingredient (e.g. the vitamin you?re trying to take) from actually working / being absorbed!?[For more information about this issue, check out the website www.earthclinic.com, 3]

As a general rule of thumb, vitamins are best absorbed when they?re delivered in a gel capsule or other liquid form, rather than in a (chalky) tablet. However, different supplements will react differently with different compounds, and are absorbed differently by the body, so it?s important to always do your homework before buying a supplement to find out what delivery method is best.

So, from the above we can understand how some supplements may be useless when trying to supplement our health or a deficiency. But why would companies produce a supplement that doesn?t work or can?t be absorbed?

Well, maybe they?re simply ?stupid? and don?t realize that how they produce the supplement affects its absorption.

Or maybe (and more realistically), it all boils down to that familiar ?root of all evil??MONEY.

If we presume supplement companies have qualified people formulating their products (and most big companies do), we can agree they probably know what they are doing, and what works and what doesn?t. So why are we being sold supplements that do not work or only work slightly?? Well, without sounding too much like a conspiracy theorist, it?s simple ? if they provide a supplement that outright works and is fully ?bioavailable? (i.e. can be fully absorbed by the body), the customer won?t need to use the supplement for that long, and may not even need to finish the first bottle. It?s therefore in the manufacturers? interest to make products that have to be bought multiple times ? i.e. ones that basically just don?t work very well!

Perhaps the worst thing is, even if the product simply does not work, their marketing department will take care of that problem.?You would be surprised how many people will swear by a new product they haven?t even used, just because the TV told them it was going to fix all their problems. I feel sorry for these people, simply because they go out and invest their hard earned money into these products thinking that they are going to help them get stronger or correct a nutritional deficiency. Some people even go as far as using a supplement in place of the natural source from food (I?m sure you?ve encountered people who think that taking a multivitamin means they don?t have to eat their vegetables!), and these people end up with new deficiencies, and new problems, then wonder what the hell is going on!

Unfortunately for most, experienced, professional advice on supplements is hard to come by. But I truly feel that we need to be better educated about our nutritional supplements (if we are going to use them) as they may end up causing us additional health problems.

There is so much I could talk about regarding supplementation, and so many different types and forms of supplementation to cover ? and therefore it?s impossible for me to cover it all in one measly article. My aim today, however, was simply to raise awareness, and hopefully spark a greater interest and concern over what we are putting into our bodies regarding nutritional supplementation.

Basically, if you do decide that you want tor need to take a supplement, do some research, get professional guidance, read your labels and think twice before you fall for the constant marketing campaigns thrown out there by these companies. After all they are businesses, and even though they are categorised in the ?health? supplement industry, it?s not always in your health?s best interest to just take their word for it!

Car bomb near Iraqi military base kills 33

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A suicide bomber driving a car packed with explosives detonated the vehicle near an Iraqi military base as soldiers changed shifts north of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 33 people and wounding 56, according to authorities.

The blast struck around midday as troops were leaving the base in Taji, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the capital, police said. Twenty-two soldiers were among the dead, and several vehicles were damaged, they said.

The casualty toll was high because the attacker blew up the car while large numbers of soldiers were walking to and from a parking area for waiting minibuses that take them to work, officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, though suicide car bombings are a favorite tactic of Sunni militant groups such as al-Qaida.

Insurgents frequently target members of the country's security forces in an effort to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government. Although violence has ebbed in Iraq since the height of the insurgency, attacks still occur frequently.

Officials said many of the wounded were soldiers. They warned the death toll could rise further because several of the injuries were serious.

Tensions at the scene remained high hours after the blast. Police and soldiers cordoned off the area and prevented journalists from approaching. Two cameras were damaged when a scuffle broke out between security forces and journalists who were trying to reach the attack site, a police official said.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The attack was the deadliest in Iraq in more than a week. On Oct. 27, insurgents unleashed a string of bombings and other attacks around the country that left at least 40 people dead.

It was the second bombing in Taji in less than 24 hours. On Monday, police said a car bomb struck an army patrol not far from the site of Tuesday's blast, wounding eight people. Another bombing Monday near an outdoor market in a Shiite neighborhood on Baghdad's outskirts killed four.

Also Tuesday, Iraq's Cabinet voted to do away with a major social safety net program and instead provide cash payments directly to citizens, government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said.

The reform would bring an end to food ration cards that many Iraqis use to buy basic, highly subsidized foodstuffs such as flour and rice. Instead, the government plans to begin paying out 15,000 dinars ($12.50) monthly and will set the price of flour starting in March.

In Iraq's north, the president of the country's self-ruled Kurdish region urged Kurds in neighboring Syria to stay united and not let political differences deteriorate into violence.

The comments by Massoud Barzani, posted Monday evening on the regional government's website, point to growing concern in Iraq that infighting among Syrian Kurds could complicate that country's civil war and risk destabilizing Iraq's Kurdish region. Syria's Kurds have been solidifying control over territory where they live during the tumult of the conflict.

Over the summer, Barzani brokered an agreement between the rival Kurdish Democratic Union Party and the Kurdish National Council, the main Kurdish umbrella group, to jointly control Kurd-populated areas in Syria.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is coming back to ABC for four episodes this holiday season. The specials were first announced when the show was canceled in December 2011.

The first of new "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" episodes premieres on Monday, November 26 at 9 p.m. ET. The Thanksgiving-themed episode will be guest-hosted by Jenny McCarthy. If a patient is still in need of coverage for depression, for instance, but their plan only allows for no more than 3 mental care visits anually, they are forced to either discontinue care or pay for the care on their own. This is a very important concern for physicians in Arizona who deem that mental illnesses should be covered by insurers just like any other disease. For example, insurers usually will pay for as many outpatient visits and inpatient care needed to efficiently handle a diabetic patient, but the same insurer will limit their coverage despite the requisite for lasting care for patients who indeed have a mental health problem.

While some of the mental health requirements of patients can be taken care of by psychologists, some patients may be too ill and in need of an MD or DO who can prescribe medicine, something a psychologist is not able to do. Over the years, doctors and mental health advocates have strongly lobbied for mental health parity that insurance companies treat mental illnesses like any other medical condition, thus leading to a greater availability of services for people with mental health problems.

Cost

The internal costs of mental sickness is immeasurable, but the monetary one is not. According to a report by the U.S. Surgeon General's office, in 1996 the United States spent more than 99 billion dollars for the direct treatment of mental disorders. In 1990, the most recent year for which estimates are on hand, the indirect cost of all mental illness was at seventy nine billion USD, with most of that amount coming from loss of productivity due to premature death, incarceration and time spent by family members caring for the ill.

Primary Care Alternative to Psychiatry

Primary care physicians are trying to compensate for the insurance coverage void by learning how to care for such patients themselves. Because those primary care service providers know they don't have anywhere to send such patients, and the individual is presumably going to keep coming back to them for care anyway, it behooves the doctors to expand their skills to cover these kinds of problems. However, many insurers refuse to reimburse primary care physicians for mental health services and only cover such services if provided by a psychiatrist.

Even with the health bill finally signed into law its effect on our health care is not recognized. By 2014 there will be an escalation in the enrollment into health care insurance programs. This boost when, shared with the long term aging of the populace, should push demand for services and therefore cost higher. However, no one yet knows what will happen to remuneration rates from Medicare and this new program. The question is will there be a cut of reimbursement amounts for different specialties by Medicaid and this new program that may contrarily become a decreasing factor of the income of all specialties including Psychiatry, its related specialties, and subspecialties.

Union Halting Repair Crews-Top Democratic Donor

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, cited in news reports for halting nonunion repair crews from helping to restore power in superstorm Sandy's New Jersey-New York path, is one of nation's top union donors to Democrats, a group President Obama last year praised in a visit to an IBEW training Center.

The Center for Responsive Politics, a public political spending watchdog, said IBEW has the nation's fifth highest spending political action committee, doling out nearly $2.3 million, 97 percent of which went to Democrats. According to the group, IBEW during this election cycle has given $2,928,973 to Democratic House and Senate candidates, and just $51,600 to Republicans. They have also helped raise money for Obama.

Among the recipients were political figures and groups in New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania, key political battleground states.

McCallie Blue Tornado, Simon Holden, Baylor Lady Raiders win cross country titles at Warner Park

BRENTWOOD, Tenn.? The Baylor girls' and McCallie cross country teams, along with Baylor senior Simon Holden, won titles at the TSSAA state meet Saturday at Percy Warner Park.

Holden ran the 5-kilometer event in 16 minutes, 6.81 seconds, while the Lady Red Raiders and Blue Tornado earned three-point Division II victories over Brentwood Academy.

Holden finished 20th as a freshman before blowing up on the state meet in 2010, finishing 39th after starting out far too fast. He was second last year before winning in his fourth try.

"It's my senior year, so I definitely wanted to win," he said. "It was my last chance. Those other years motivated me. That blow-up was embarrassing and I looked dumb, but last year I was better. This year strategy-wise, my approach was the same. Coach told me to go and I had to listen to my coach."

The best advice Baylor coach Jan Gautier gave to Holden didn't come Saturday; it came when she prodded the lacrosse player as a ninth-grader into running cross country.

"He has been nothing but focused this year," she said. "He built his confidence and really wanted to be a state champ. He did everything I asked him to do, and I'm happy he got the win."

The bad guy in a low-resolution '80s video game is a reluctant villain who tears down buildings with his sledgehammer fists. He's ready for a change in today's high-resolution world in "Wreck-It Ralph," in 3D.

To break out of his bad-guy image Ralph travels to grand game central, where there is access to every video game in the world. If he can win a few levels, who knows, he may become that good guy he has always wanted to be. The clever writing and character development is met with a solid voice-over cast which includes John C. Reilly as Ralph, Sarah Silverman as the voice of Vanellope and Jane Lynch as Sgt. Calhoun. There are dozens of retro games for the grown-ups and a solid storyline for the kids.

As in the tradition of "Toy Story," this film does a great job of imagining the secret lives of children's playthings. "Wreck-It Ralph" is clever, action-packed, and original. But there are nearly 190 unique characters in this movie, and that does clutter things up a bit, for my taste. The Flick-O-Meter gives "Wreck-It Ralph" a four out of five. The film is, like so many other Disney movies, about being comfortable being yourself. That's what the three or four main characters try to convey but they all got lost toward the end of movie, competing for screen time with dozens of other throw-back characters.

The children are growing up (5 and 7 now), and there are more and more games that I can play with them. Some are children games, but many are "normal" games not designed specifically for children, or games that adults can enjoy too. We are no longer playing with the components, and I seldom need to invent simplified rules for grown-up games. They often request games. I hope they continue to enjoy them as they grow up, and that they'll continue to play with me when I get old and senile.

20 Oct 2012. Chen Rui playing Viva Topo!, a game about mice racing to grab the biggest pieces of cheese without getting caught by the cat. Shee Yun only has one "strategy" - no one gets left behind. She moves all her mice evenly, like a family sticking together. In this game, this is not always a good idea. She is too kind and cannot bear anyone being left behind.

On 26 Oct 2012 we visited Meeples Cafe again. We stayed three hours, playing a total of 9 different games, some new to us and some not. It was a fun outing.

Captain Clueless. I teamed up with Shee Yun again, and Michelle teamed up with Chen Rui. The children didn't want to be blindfolded, so Michelle and I played the captains. My team (red) had very lucky cards. All our destinations were nearby (Roatan, then Montego Bay, then Kingston), and we quickly completed our voyage and returned home. Forbidden Island, the family version of Pandemic by the same designer. It is a cooperative game where players need to collect four treasures and fly off in a helicopter before the island sinks. The core mechanisms are the same, but the game is streamlined and slightly simplified. There are some differences. The game is very well designed. It is still quite tense. We played the lowest difficulty level. The treasures look very good. We made a rule mistake in the first half of the game, which caused the island to sink more slowly than it should. So the game was even easier than Very Easy level. Still, the tension did build up and I felt that we were not far from the verge of losing. This was late in the game. Quite a number of areas were flooded (the blue and white tiles) and some had sunk. Later even more areas sank into the ocean, but we made it eventually.

When playing this game, Michelle and I guided the children most of the time. It was still a little beyond them. But they felt they had participated and they enjoyed it. We presented to them the few better options, or if they were making an obviously poor move or missing a golden opportunity, we gently suggested the better approach. I think they liked working together as a team.

I didn't expect much from Forbidden Island, because I thought it would be just a simpler little brother to Pandemic. However it turned out to be quite refreshing. I don't need to own it, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It's a good gift choice for non-gamers.

Ubongo Extreme, where the shapes are made of hexagons. The general idea is the same as Ubongo, which I own. The scoring is a little different, simpler in fact. The puzzles are tougher. There was one I simply couldn't get after trying for a long time. Eventually it was Michelle who solved it. Similar to Ubongo, the puzzles are two sided. This is the easier side, needing 3 pieces. The harder side needs four pieces. Escape: The Curse of the Temple was a hot game at the recent Essen game fair. It's a 10-minute, real-time, cooperative, dice game. To win, players need to explore a buried temple, collect enough gems, find the exit, and all must leave the temple before time runs out. All actions are done using action dice, and everyone gets five of them. You do your own thing using your own dice, all in real-time. You can coordinate with your fellow players, because some tiles need multiple players in order to fully utilise. Three had escaped from the temple. When we played this, Michelle and I had no time to guide the children so we had to let them fend for themselves. We were busy enough managing our own dice and actions. They knew the basic idea and played on their own, although I don't think they strategised much. Chen Rui (5) mostly enjoyed rolling the blessing side and she kept asking who needed a blessing (to get rid of curses). Shee Yun (7) went off in a different direction exploring the temple by herself. Or maybe I should say we moved too fast and left her behind. Both the children seemed to enjoy themselves. I think this being a cooperative game helped. We all won together. Actually we probably didn't win. We did "beat" the game by collecting enough gems and exiting the temple, but we didn't use the soundtrack that comes with the game (which is a timer) and I'm quite sure we spent more than 10 minutes. Toss Your Cookies is basically a card game. Everyone has a hand of seven cards, and the goal is to collect 5 biscuits of the same type plus the milk card, of which there is only one in the game. In this photo, the two leftmost cards are jokers. Every turn a player rolls two dice, and everyone follows the instruction given by the die roll. This combination here means the person with the milk card must give it to another player, and then get another card in return. This combination means everyone passes two cards left. If the "TOSS" word were face-up, then everyone would toss two cards face-up onto the table, and race to grab the cards they want (still restricted to the hand size of seven). Michelle won. Toss Your Cookies is a simple game suitable for children and casual players. Mostly a party game. Dixit. I have played this with the children before. This was my turn to be the storyteller. The clue I gave was "animal". Since this was such a generic word, I was sure there would be others contributing cards with animals, and it would be difficult for everyone to guess the correct answer (the goal is to only have some players guess your card correctly). It turned out that all cards contributed had animals. A dragon is considered an animal, right? Albeit a mythical one. However, that turn everyone guessed my card correctly! What are the odds of that?! Apples to Apples. First time for all of us. The idea is that every round a player takes the role of judge, and flips over a green adjective card. Each other player then picks a red noun card from his/her hand to play. The judge decides which noun card is the best, and whoever played it gains 1pt. The contestants can try to be creative in picking nouns. They can also try to present their reasoning to persuade the judge to pick their cards. My hand of noun cards. The game didn't quite work with the children. Too many concepts and words they are not familiar with. Even I don't know much about Clark Gable. There is a children's version of Apples to Apples. Maybe that would have worked better. At least it wouldn't have any adorable oil spills. I thought my Infomercial card would surely win. It didn't. Gall Bladder won.

We also played two dexterity games at Meeples Cafe, Hamsterrolle (which we have played before) and Bamboleo. We didn't even last one round of Bamboleo. Shee Yun toppled the platter on her first turn. The game took less than 20 seconds. Chen Rui sulked and said this game sucked.

All in all, it was a wonderful outing and a great way to spend time with the family.

27 Oct 2012. Playing Uno at home with the children. I bought two card holders (which was suggested by a reader here - thank you!). Only my younger daughter Chen Rui (5) really needed one, but I bought one for elder daughter Shee Yun (7) anyway. Chen Rui used to spend a lot of time peeking at her cards one by one because she couldn't hold them properly and had lay them face-down in front of her. Now she spends a lot of time trying to stick her cards into the card holder instead. So the end result is we still need to wait for her when he turn comes. Hopefully she'll get better at using the card holder soon. This is a very old copy of Uno from my childhood. I counted the cards once, and one was missing. Doesn't bother me though. I don't even remember which card it is. Once when I was about the shuffle cards, this little mischief Chen Rui intentionally blocked my way. So I shuffled the cards on her forehead. She thought that was funny, and since then she has been requesting me to do this whenever we play Uno.

For the fourth year in a row, Glendora has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal planning and budgeting.

The city received the award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, a nonprofit professional association of 17,400 government finance professionals in North America.

In order to receive the award, the governing body must satisfy national budget guidelines of policy documents, financial planning, and communication.

Practical or post-secondary teaching experience within the last 7 years is required in legal business aspects, contracts, bailment, negotiable instruments, partnerships, consumer credit, or government s influence on business law.

Aviation/Aerospace-related business activities experience is preferred.

All acceptable degrees require 18 graduate-level semester hours or more in government, political science, and/or history. Brother pleads guilty in NC beheading plot - Idaho Statesman

RALEIGH, N.C. ? The younger brother of a North Carolina terror suspect serving 45 years in prison for plotting to attack a Marine base pleaded guilty Thursday to plotting to behead government witnesses who testified against his sibling.

Shkumbin Sherifi, 22, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to a single count of conspiracy to commit murder for hire along with a co-defendant, former special education teacher Nevine Aly Elshiekh, 47, of Raleigh.

Prosecutors offered a plea deal to both, agreeing to drop eight other counts in exchange for testimony against Hysen Sherifi at his upcoming trial, set to begin Monday.

Authorities say Hysen Sherifi, 28, asked another inmate to help him hire a hit man and then recruited his brother and Elshiekh to deliver a $5,000 down payment for the first murder.

But the fellow inmate Sherifi approached contacted the FBI instead, allowing federal agents to set up an elaborate sting that included a confidential informant posing as the representative of a shadowy assassin named Treetop. That informant took the money and later provided faked pictures appearing to show the targeted witness beheaded and lying in a shallow grave.

Shkumbin Sherifi and Elshiekh were both videotaped meeting with the made-up hit man's helper and federal agents say the school teacher hocked her gold jewelry to help finance the beheading. Each faces up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines when they are sentenced in February.

The younger Sherifi's defense lawyer, James Payne of Shallotte, said his client's decision to become a government witness had been a tough one.

"Obviously, this is his brother and this is a difficult time for Shkumbin, but he is ready to step forward and take responsibility for his actions," Payne, a retired Marine, said after the hearing.

The Sherifi family fled Kosovo in 1999 during a brutal sectarian war between Serbs and ethnic Albanians. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Shkumbin Sherifi lived at home with his parents and sisters, occasionally taking classes at a nearby community college and recording vengeful rap music in his native Albanian. Earlier deemed a flight risk by a federal judge, Sherifi will remain in detention until sentencing.

Elshiekh will remain free on bond pending sentencing. She and her lawyer declined comment as they walked out of the courtroom.

Born in the United States to Egyptian parents, Elshiekh worked until her arrest as the director of special education at Sterling Montessori Academy, a state-supported charter school in Morrisville. She had also served as a teacher at a religious school affiliated with the Islamic Association of Raleigh, the city's largest mosque.

The elder Sherifi was one of six Raleigh Muslims convicted last year of being part of a homegrown terrorist plot to attack the U.S. Marine Corps base at Quantico, Va., and targets overseas. The case hinged largely on surveillance tapes made by confidential informants paid by the FBI, with no direct evidence any of the men had actually agreed to kill anyone.

A family friend of one of the defendants, Elshiekh was among a group of supporters from the Raleigh mosque who attended the month-long trial and claimed the men were being railroaded by an overzealous federal government. After Hysen Sherifi's conviction, Elshiekh made regular visits to see him at the New Hanover County jail, when prosecutors allege she became involved in the plot to hire the hit man.

In prior court appearances, Elshiekh wore an ankle-length black dress and matching headscarf that concealed everything but her face and hands. Members of her mosque, some of whom she had taught as girls, filled the courtroom to support her claim of innocence.

As she pleaded guilty to a federal felony on Thursday, only Elshiekh's sister and elderly parents sat in the benches behind her. The defendant wore western clothes, her long dark hair uncovered and flowing down her back.
