People who reported dietary intake that was most consistent with the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans had lower risk of pancreatic cancer, according to a new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Previous studies investigating the relationship between food and nutrient intake and pancreatic cancer have yielded inconsistent results. The U.S. Government issues evidence-based dietary guidelines that provide the basis for federal nutrition policy and education activities to promote overall health for Americans. The authors evaluated how closely study participants' diets matched the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, as measured by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2005), and then compared their risk of pancreatic cancer.

Hannah Arem, Ph.D.,, from the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, and colleagues calculated HEI-2005 scores for 537,218 participants in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study (ages 50-71 years), based on responses to food frequency questionnaires. Pancreatic cancer risk was then compared between those with high and low HEI-2005 scores, accounting for the influence of other known pancreatic cancer risk factors.

Among the study participants there were 2,383 new cases of pancreatic cancer. Overall, the investigators observed a 15% lower risk of pancreatic cancer among participants with the highest HEI-2005 score compared to those with the lowest HEI-2005 score. This association was stronger among overweight or obese men compared to men of normal weight, but there was no difference for normal vs. overweight or obese women. While the authors adjusted for known risk factors such as smoking and diabetes status, they caution that other health factors not collected in the questionnaires may be associated with a more healthful diet and might explain some of the observed reduced risk. They also noted that diet is difficult to measure and the HEI-2005 was not designed specifically for the purpose of overall cancer prevention.

According to Arem and colleagues "the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are issued to promote overall health, including the maintenance of a healthy weight and disease prevention. Our findings support the hypothesis that a high-quality diet may also play a role in reducing pancreatic cancer risk." Future studies are needed to confirm these findings.

In an accompanying editorial, Rachel Ballard-Barbash, M.D., and Susan M. Krebs-Smith, Ph.D., from the Applied Research Program at the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD), and Marian L. Neuhouser, Ph.D., from the Cancer Prevention Program in the Division of Public Health Sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Seattle, WA) discuss that progress has been made in understanding associations between diet and cancer risk, but they have not resulted in noticeable changes in cancer incidence in the US. They conclude, "Practical and actionable dietary recommendations that are based on sound research should ultimately reduce patient suffering and treatment-related expenditures from preventable cancers."

Public debt reaches 90 percent of GDP after growing ?6.4bn in June

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.thespainforum.com --- Sunday, August 18, 2013
Spanish public Debt continued to climb in June with 6.368 billion more added to the books, the Bank of Spain revealed Friday. The increase puts the total amount owed by Spain's public administrations at 943.702 billion, an amount equivalent to 90.3 percent of gross domestic product, according to the central bank, which put GDP last year at 1.045 trillion euros. Spain has gone from having one of the lowest levels of public Debt in the European Union - 36.3 percent of GDP - to an above average rate since the start of the crisis. The main explanation is to be found in its huge budget discrepancies, which reached their height in 2009 under the Socialists, with a deficit above 11 percent that led to a notable spike in Debt that year. Despite a drop in the budget deficit, a similar rise was recorded in the ruling Popular Party's first year in power (2012) because of the financing of different operations to provide liquidity to regional and local governments and the taking on of a 40-billion European bailout for the banking sector. And the Debt has only gone on rising this year - by around 50 billion - as a result of more measures to help the public administrations, but also because the Treasury has brought forward its placements of Debt in the market to take advantage of a recent fall in Spain's risk premium. * More... ...

Twitter sets new tweets per second record, explains why 143k simultaneous updates didn't make it stutter

Remember the last time you saw the infamous Twitter fail whale? With any luck, it's been a while -- the microblogging outfit is boasting that it withstood a one-second peak of 143,199 Tweets earlier this month. This volley of updates stands not only as a new record for tweets per second (the previous record topped out at 33,338), but as a sign for the social network's stability. Twitter's Raffi Krikorian took to the company's engineering blog to elaborate.

Three years ago, the World Cup brought Twitter to its knees -- crashing the service with nearly every play. Krikorian says the experience gave the company pause, prompting them reevaluate its approach to managing traffic. "We learned a lot. We changed our engineering organization." Krikorian goes on to detail the transformation, explaining how the firm tweaked its programming models, architecture, services, applications and storage databases to eliminate bottlenecks and increase stability. "We're now able to withstand events like Castle in the Sky viewings, the Super Bowl, and the global New Year's Eve celebration." All of the above topics are addressed at length, but Twitter promises future blog updates diving into each subject at even greater length. So, curious as to why exactly you haven't missed out on any of @GeorgeTakei's quirky banter? Check out the attached source link and find out.

Lauren Graham and Ellen DeGeneres Land Drama With the CW

By Tim Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Lauren Graham is back in business with The CW - and she's bringing Ellen DeGeneres along with her.

The former "Gilmore Girls" star has landed a script deal to adapt her novel "Someday, Someday, Maybe" as a one-hour drama.

Graham will write the project as well as executive produce. DeGeneres is also executive producing with Jeff Kleeman through their A Very Good Production company.

The drama will center around a young woman with six months left on her three-year plan to make a career as an actress in New York City.

The novel, Graham's first, was released this year and is based on Graham's experience on the 1990s New York acting scene. The book entered the New York Times best-seller list.

A Very Good Production is producing in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Chris Boyd becomes fifth Vanderbilt football player indicted in rape case

NASHVILLE, Tenn. A fifth Vanderbilt football player has been indicted for his alleged role in the rape of an unconscious student on campus.

Metro Nashville Police say 21-year-old Chris Boyd came to police headquarters Saturday morning after being indicted on Friday and turned himself in. Police say Boyd gave another defendant advice on how to cover up the crime.

Vanderbilt released a statement Friday saying he had been suspended from the team pending further review. Four other players already have been dismissed.

Police say Boyd's representatives are aware of the indictment and he is expected to turn himself in. His bond is set at $25,000.

Boyd caught 50 passes for 774 yards and five touchdowns last season.

"All of these allegations, including those brought today, are deeply troubling, and we take them very seriously," Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs Beth Fortune said in a statement. The statement notes that none of the former players have been found guilty. It also says that Vanderbilt continues to cooperate closely with the district attorney's office and the police.

Two California men also were indicted Friday. Nineteen-year-old Miles Finley and 20-year-old Joseph Quinzio are charged with felony tampering with evidence.

Police say Finley was arrested by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department while officers continue to search for Quinzio. Both men have been given a $150,000 bond and will be held as fugitives wanted by the state of Tennessee.

The two men are acquaintances of defendant Brandon Vandenburg, a 20-year-old former Vanderbilt player from Indio, Calif.

Vandenburg remains jailed on $350,000 bond, while three other former players have bonded out: 19-year-old Cory Batey, of Nashville, bonded out Friday; Brandon Banks, of Brandywine, Md., and Jaborian McKenzie, of Woodville, Miss., both 19, bonded out previously.

The four players were dismissed from the team on June 29 and face rape charges. Their arraignment is set for Aug. 21, although McKenzie already has pleaded not guilty and waived his right to appear at the arraignment.

Egypt's Military-Backed Government Considers Ban on Muslim Brotherhood

17 Aug 2013, 4:29 PM PDT post a comment

According to the Associated Press, Egyptian "Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi... assigned the Ministry of Social Solidarity" to looking into options for doing away with the group.

The irony is that just over a month ago Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood was running the show in Egypt. But Morsi has not been seen since the military ousted him on July 3, and over the last four days that same military has been trying to clear away pro-Morsi encampments around Egypt's capitol.?

The news of a possible outright ban on the Muslim Brotherhood comes as another blow to Obama's far-less-than-stellar foreign policy record. In this week alone we've learned that calls for a "peaceful" transition?from Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry, and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel have gone unheeded by Egypt's military. On top of this we learned that Obama didn't even find out the extent of violence in Egypt until August 15--the day after 149 people died in clashes between the military and pro-Morsi supporters.?

Add to this the fact that Obama supported Morsi as president, and it is evident that Egypt is making its own decisions about which path to take going forward, regardless of the White House's wishes.

The Reluctant Housedad: How I long for a holiday romance ...

The Reluctant Housedad: How I long for a holiday romance!Alamy

And so, at last, it is time for our annual summer holiday. This year we're staying put in Dear Old Blighty after a quite disastrous trip to a Brittany mobile home last year, which ended with our caravan being broken into and all the kids' gadgets being nicked.

Unfortunately, though, I can't see this year's break being any less stressful.

Of course, it's going to be great (for my working wife) to spend time with the kids (I spend enough time with them, thank you very much) but we are also duty-bound to spend time with lots of other people, too ? namely our extended families.

This is the problem when you moved as far away from your parents as economically possible when you left home: you don't think that one day, when you've had kids, it might have been a bit wiser to stay put so you could capitalise on the free babysitting.

But sadly, my wife and I have never been that strategic. When we left home, we both moved more than 300 miles away from our parents ? and now we're paying the price. Because it means that on the rare occasions my wife takes time off work, we invariably have to load the car to see our parents.

It's important, of course it is, especially for grandparents to see their grandkids and vice versa. And also for them to see their aunts, uncles and cousins.

But sometimes, just sometimes, my wife and I look at each other forlornly and wish we could get away from it all. Just the two of us. Sans enfants, so to speak.

Whiich brings me to Paris...The last time my wife and I had a romantic weekend without ? by definition - the kids was five years ago when our youngest was a year old.

My two best friends ? both dads themselves - bravely stepped up to the plate and took charge of our three children so that we could wander the streets and cafes of Gay Paree unfettered by runny noses, demands for sweets and requests to be carried because little feet were tired.

Over those two evenings we went out for spectacular dinners before arriving back at our hotel, with a view of the Opera House, and then collapsed on our massive bed, happily exhausted.

Oh, how we look back on that weekend with misty-eyed nostalgia. It feels like another lifetime away.

For since then, I was made redundant, my wife swapped being a stay-at-home-mum for an office job, and all our holidays since have been rather fraught, frantic, frenetic family affairs. Just like the one we're about to embark on.

We're not alone in thinking like this, of course. According to a survey by family holiday firm Tots Too most parents of young children would like more, ahem, intimacy together on holiday.

The company quizzed 1,000 mums and dads about what they'd most like to do on holiday and top of the list was having a romantic dinner for two, followed by slipping away for a spot of hanky-panky.

The top 10 desires goes as follows:

1. Dinner for two

2. Back to the suite for sex

3. Uninterrupted sunbathing by the pool or at the beach

4. Treatments in the spa

5. Catching up on precious sleep

6. A visit to local attractions that wouldn't appeal to kids

7. Reading a good book

8. Shopping

9. Hiking and walking

10. Tidying the suite, apartment or villa

11. Other

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? Ah well, we can but dream. Back to packing the water wings!

Isner rallies for Cincinnati upset of del Potro

MASON, Ohio (AP) ? Unseeded American John Isner rallied from losing a first-set tiebreaker to upset seventh-seeded Juan Martin del Potro 6-7 (4), 7-6 (9), 6-3 in a grueling Western & Southern Open semifinal Saturday.

The 22nd-ranked Isner, in his first appearance in the tournament's semifinals, had been 0-4 against the Argentine. He'll play third-seeded Rafael Nadal, a 7-5, 7-6 (4) winner over sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych.

The 6-foot-10 Isner needed 2 hours, 47 minutes to improve to 16-3 since retiring from Wimbledon in the second round with a left knee injury.

Top-ranked Serena Williams advanced to the women's final, beating defending-champion Li Na, 7-5, 7-5. In the second semifinal, second-seeded Victoria Azarenka beat Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Thursday's NFL roundup, Aug. 15

PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Vick was nearly flawless, Nick Foles looked sharp and the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback competition remains close.

Vick and Foles each led touchdown drives in a 14-9 exhibition victory over Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.

Vick completed his first nine passes before throwing an interception on a desperation heave at the end of the second quarter after the Eagles (1-1) got the ball with 24 seconds left in the half. He finished 9 of 10 for 105 yards and also ran for 20.

Foles was 6 of 8 for 53 yards. He had 13 yards rushing, including a 7-yard TD scamper. But Foles made a big mistake on his first series when he tried to throw the ball out of the end zone and had the pass picked off.

Newton had a so-so effort against a defense that was picked apart last week by New England's Tom Brady. Newton was 8 of 17 for 112 yards. He played the first half and led the Panthers (1-1) to a pair of field goals.

Ravens 27, Falcons 23: At Baltimore, Matt Ryan threw for 97 yards and a touchdown in four series, and Atlanta limited Baltimore's starting offense to three first downs in the first half before the Ravens' backups rallied.

Atlanta's starters bounced back nicely from a 34-10 loss to Cincinnati one week earlier. Under Ryan's direction, the Falcons pierced Baltimore for 11 first downs in 16½ minutes and built a 20-7 lead at halftime.

It was 23-7 before Baltimore (2-0) scored 20 fourth-quarter points, including a 78-yard punt return by Asa Jackson with 6:18 remaining.

Ryan went 8 for 15 and threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones. Steven Jackson had 42 yards rushing against the defending Super Bowl champions.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco played the first half, completing 7 of 9 passes for 118 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown pass to Torrey Smith.

Bears 33, Chargers 28: At Chicago, Jay Cutler looked shaky again and the Chicago defense made up for it, harassing Philip Rivers early on and setting the tone for the Bears in a preseason victory over San Diego.

All eyes remain on the quarterback after the Bears made some big changes on offense in the offseason, hiring coach Marc Trestman to replace Lovie Smith and revising their line.

So far, the results are mixed at best.

Cutler played a quarter and completed 4-of-5 passes for 38 yards and a touchdown, but the only receiver he targeted was Brandon Marshall. That's not a good sign for the Bears, considering they want to distribute the ball more evenly this year. Nor was Cutler getting intercepted trying to hit Marshall in double coverage.

On a more positive note for the Bears' offense, Matt Forte ran for 74 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts after carrying just once in a loss at Carolina in the preseason opener.

His 58-yard run around the left end set up the game's first touchdown, a 5-yard strike from Cutler to Marshall.

Devin Hester also showed a spark, returning the game's opening kickoff 45 yards. And reserve Michael Ford ran one back 100 yards in the third quarter, leading to a 3-yard scoring run by Michael Bush.

The first-team defense sacked Rivers three times and forced two turnovers, even though star defensive end Julius Peppers (hamstring), defensive tackle Henry Melton (concussion) and linebacker D.J. Williams (strained right calf) sat out with injuries.

Rivers got swarmed as soon as he stepped on the field, and the Chargers fell again after getting pounded by Seattle last week. He was 5 of 9 for 50 yards with an interception, and he lost a fumble on a sack by Shea McClellin, leading to a 3-yard run by Forte that made it 14-0 near the end of the first quarter.

Backup Charlie Whitehurst came in early in the second quarter and was 6 for 9 for 69 yards and a touchdown. He fumbled away his first snap, leading to a field goal by Robbie Gould, but he also led the Chargers on an 80-yard TD drive late in the half.

Cutler got sacked twice on the opening drive, an ominous start after he threw an interception on Chicago's first play from scrimmage the previous week.

Notable: Tom Brady returned to practice one day after hurting his knee. The New England Patriots quarterback participated fully in the team's walkthrough Thursday. It was the third day of joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It isn't known if he'll play tonight when the teams meet in an exhibition game. ... New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton says veteran linebacker Jonathan Vilma has traveled to Philadelphia to have arthroscopic knee surgery. Payton is not offering any timeline for Vilma's return, saying only that the linebacker is expected back and that the Saints would "kind of go from there."

Sweden's Emma Green Tregaro prepares to competes in the women's high jump final at the World Athletics Championships in the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, Russia, Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013. (AP) ? The Swedish high jumper who painted her fingernails in rainbow colors to support gay rights at the world championships took the field Saturday with bright red nail polish this time.

Emma Green Tregaro had been told by Swedish officials that the rainbow gesture, which brought international attention as a protest against Russia's new law against gay "propaganda," could be a violation of the competition's code of conduct.

"It was harder to not paint them in the rainbow than it was to choose to paint them," Green Tregaro said Saturday. "I'm surprised by the big reactions, but I'm happy about the big reaction because it's mostly been very positive."

The 28-year-old Green Tregaro won the bronze medal at the 2005 world championships, but she finished fifth Saturday at Luzhniki Stadium.

She said the Swedish track and field federation asked her to "please respect the rules" and change the color of her nails.

"So I decided to paint them red instead, for love," Green Tregaro said.

Green Tregaro's gesture Thursday was a quiet criticism of a Russian law that bans so-called propaganda supporting homosexuality to minors. Russian pole vault star Yelena Isinbayeva later said the protest showed disrespect to Russia.

The general secretary of the Swedish federation said earlier Saturday that the IAAF, the sport's governing body, had warned them that Green Tregaro may have violated the code of conduct.

"They were saying that this was by definition a breach of the regulations, not saying anything else, really," Anders Albertsson said. "We have informed our athletes about this."

Green Tregaro said that Swedish officials were standing by her.

"But I didn't want the federation to experience any consequences in any way for my choice," Green Tregaro said.

Isinbayeva's criticism of the Swedish athlete's gesture attracted wide attention because she also said she supported Russia's law and that Russians have "normal" heterosexual relations.

Isinbayeva said the next day she may have been misunderstood because she was speaking in English instead of her native language. She also said she is against discrimination.

Homeowners, tourists flee Sun Valley resort region as massive wildfire approaches

Hundreds of homes are being destroyed and many more are still under the threat of wildfires in Utah and in Idaho. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

By Daniel Arkin, Staff Writer, NBC News

More than one thousand residences near the Idaho mountain resort community of Sun Valley were under mandatory evacuation orders Friday as a wind-driven wildfire ripped through sage and pine trees, threatening lives and homes.

At least 1,600 homes were included in the evacuation order, according to according to NBC affiliate KTVB.

Some 700 state and federal firefighters were deployed to battle the monstrous blaze as it moved east toward the affluent region, which is a second home to celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Hanks, according to The Associated Press.?

Private insurers have dispatched their own crews to provide structural protection for homes valued in the tens of millions of dollars, said Bronwyn Nickel, a spokeswoman for Blaine County, which is east of the capital of Boise, according to the AP.

?There are private engines that insurance companies have sent in,? Nickel said. ?They?re on site, they?re working with our local firefighters and law enforcement.?

A massive DC-10 tanker, capable of hauling 12,000 gallons of flame retardant, was among the fleet of aircraft making drops on the Beaver Creek Fire, which has burned more than 64,000, according to fire officials.

Meanwhile, flying in separate aircraft, Gov. C.L. ?Butch? Otter and U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell took an aerial tour of the giant fire, according to the AP.

Residents in the towns of Ketchum and Sun Valley, where the temperature Friday afternoon hit 93 degrees, were advised to ready their belongings in case they need to leave abruptly.

Fire managers ?are just adding an extra layer of caution to the plan that they started last night,? said Rudy Evenson, a spokesman for the federal team spearheading the fight against the fire, according to the AP. ?We have a forecast for 30-mph winds at the ridge tops.?

Southbound traffic on U.S. Highway 75 was clogged Friday, as many homeowners and vacationers attempted to flee the smoky blaze.

Flames blaze down a ridge as the Beaver Creek wildfire rages outside Hailey, Idaho, on Friday, Aug. 16.

?They just don?t know which way the fire is going to go, so they?ve got to get everybody ready,? Hailey resident Jane McCann told the AP. ?The smoke is unbearable. Today in Hailey, you couldn?t see the mountains from Main Street.?

Fire officials said strong winds, low humidity and tinder-dry vegetation gave rise to conditions that stirred up the huge blaze, according to KTVB. It was ignited by lightning Aug. 7, according to officials.

The National Weather Service warned early Friday that gusting winds and ?very low? humidity in parts of Idaho - already dealing with eight other large fires - meant there was a risk of that more wildfires could break out.

It said fires could turn into ?wind driven events with explosive fire growth on new and ongoing fires.? Containment of the fire had dropped to 6 percent by Friday night.

Warnings that new wildfires could break out were also in place for parts of Utah, Montana and Hawaii.

To the west of the Beaver Creek Fire,?the Elk Complex Fire in the southern Idaho mountains has burned more than 125,000 acres and destroyed 38 homes and 43 other structures.

Evacuation orders have cleared out the town of Pine, a popular vacation area where most of the destroyed homes were located. The fire?was listed as 50 percent contained, but the?Forest Service said in a notice Thursday?said full containment was not expected until Oct. 1.

Fire officials also continued to struggle with the Rockport 5 wildfire near Park City, Utah, which has destroyed eight homes and spans nearly 2,000 acres.

In all, 34 major fires are burning across 11 states, fueled largely by severe drought conditions.

The Associated Press and Andrew Rafferty of NBC News contributed to this report.

Canada's telecoms to change tack in anti-Verizon crusade: sources

TORONTO | Fri Aug 16, 2013 3:57pm EDT

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's three biggest wireless companies plan to attack Verizon Communications Inc's role in the U.S. government's electronic spying scandal, as they scramble to force Ottawa to rethink rules that encourage Verizon to set up in Canada, according to four sources.

The Canadian government has so far spurned an intense lobbying effort from the trio - Rogers Communications, BCE Inc and Telus Corp - by insisting its policies will cut Canadians' wireless bills.

The planned campaign, which has yet to get a final green light, will focus on how Verizon's entry into Canada could open the door to overreaching surveillance and a loss of privacy for Canadians, said the sources, who declined to be named as the plans are not yet public.

If the companies sign off on the proposals, the ads will start appearing in newspapers, online and on radio next week in the hope that they will swing public opinion behind the three players and persuade the government to change its mind.

Telus, BCE and Rogers declined to comment on any changes to the campaign.

Under current rules, new entrant Verizon could bid in a 2014 auction for two of four prime blocks of the spectrum that wireless companies need to operate mobile services, while the existing big players can only bid for one block apiece.

Verizon can also buy one or more of the smaller telecom firms, an option that is not open for the three Canadian firms.

Sources told Reuters in June that Verizon had offered between $600 million and $800 million for newcomer Wind Mobile and was in talks with another upstart, Mobilicity.

Verizon has said only that it is exploring the possibility of a Canadian entry.

FOLD OR WIN

Lobbyists, advisers and insiders at the three big firms concede that their current blitz of ads about the need for a "level playing field" in the spectrum auction has not convinced Ottawa to change its mind.

"They're either going to have to fold their tents and live with this, or win the fight," said a source familiar with the new campaign. "If they are going to win the fight they obviously need much more aggressive tactics."

The three firms between them control 90 percent of the Canadian mobile market, and they struggle to win sympathy from consumers looking at often lower U.S. costs.

"There's enough negative feedback about the campaign coming in that they're scrambling for new messages," said a second source close to one of the established operators.

Verizon was named in documents released by fugitive former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden that detailed electronic spying operations by the U.S. National Security Agency, including a vast log of phone calls by its customers.

The Canadian government says it will stick with its rules, which it says are designed to ensure that there are four major wireless operators across Canada.

On Friday the ruling Conservative Party launched www.consumersfirst.ca website to press its case and push back against the telecom companies' own site www.fairforcanada.ca.

With a potentially grueling election campaign ahead for the Conservative Party in a year or two, lobbyists and lawyers believe the government could back down if it senses public opinion is moving away from it.

But a fiercer bidding war could also boost the government's take in the spectrum auction, making it easier for Ottawa to balance its books ahead of the October 2015 federal election.

The deadline for bidders to register for the auction is September 17, and the auction is due to start on January 14 next year.

Ancient tombs unearthed in far western China

    Published: Aug. 16, 2013 at 4:47 PM

BEIJNG, China, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Archaeologists said Friday they had unearthed a group of tombs in remote western China that date back about 2,500 years.

The tombs were believed built by the ancient Zoroastrians and were discovered in the high-altitude Pamirs Plateau near the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said.

The Zoroastrian religion is one of the earliest in recorded history and originated in ancient Persia. Scholars consider it a significant influence on the so-called Abrahamic religions of the Middle East, which include modern Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Baha'i faiths.

China's Xinhua news agency said the newly excavated tombs were built on a platform with lines of black and white stones arranged alongside like the rays of the Sun. "The ray-like stone strings like sunshine and the black-and-white arrangement symbolize light and dark, good and evil," said expedition leader Wu Xinhua. "They are basic elements in Zoroastrian theory and are clearly symbolic of Zoroastrianism."

Among the discoveries at the site were wooden so-called flame pots, which were in line with the Zoroastrians' worship of fire, and articles of cloth and bamboo believed to come from both eastern China and what is now Iran.

There were no remains found at the site, which would jibe with the ancient custom of reburying the dead after a period of time.

SEC bars Conrad Black from U.S. directorships

    By Andrea Hopkins

(Reuters) - The U.S. securities regulator on Thursday banned former press baron Conrad Black from acting as a director of a U.S. company and said he must pay $4.1 million in restitution in a settlement that ends a long-standing lawsuit over Black's dealings as the head of the Hollinger media empire.

In its heyday, Hollinger International operated a raft of newspapers that included the Chicago Sun-Times, the Jerusalem Post, Britain's Daily Telegraph and the National Post in Black's native Canada. Black, 68, gave up Canadian citizenship when he became a member of Britain's House of Lords.

The final judgment by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission followed Black's appeal of an October 2012 SEC judgment that ordered him to pay $6.1 million. He was released from U.S. prison more than a year ago after serving a sentence for fraud and obstruction of justice.

The $4.1 million will be paid to Chicago Newspaper Liquidation Corp, formerly known as the Sun-Times Media Group, which was a Hollinger successor company in the United States.

Black was found guilty in 2007 of scheming with partner David Radler and other executives to siphon off millions of dollars from the sale of newspapers as they unwound Hollinger International.

But two of his three fraud convictions were later voided and his 78-month sentence was shortened to 42 months. He served 37 months, was released in May 2012 and now lives in Toronto.

"In the circumstances, and given the correlation of forces and the defamation I endured, it is a very happy ending," Black said in an email, noting that a libel suit related to the affair had ended in a settlement. "The collapse of the onslaught against me speaks for itself."

The SEC deal clears the way for the Ontario Securities Commission, Canada's major securities regulator, to proceed with its own case against Black and two other former Hollinger executives.

In a hearing scheduled to begin on Friday, the regulator wants to ban Black from buying or trading in securities and from becoming a director of a public company in Ontario.

Black described the OSC action as a "technical matter."

"I am not aware of any monetary claim, or of any ground for one," he said.
